Ketan Sheikh's Finance and Banking Column The Price of Money Oceans in a Drop –  The Power of Micro-Savings In the previous Boishakh issue, I discussed financial literacy and the importance of having a bank account. This time, I’ll be writing about how financial inclusion through banks can be a powerful tool for micro-saving, and how we can turn this practice into a long-term, sustainable habit that truly benefits us. The Cash Habit—A Double-Edged Sword Just a decade ago, cash dominated our daily transactions. Digital payments, cards, or checks existed but were far from popular, and most vendors didn’t have the infrastructure to support them. Similarly, when it came to saving, we’d often stash cash in some secret spot at home—a tin box, a bag of rice, or under the mattress. Then came the pandemic, and like many other things, this habit was forcibly challenged. Since 2020, we’ve all adapted to cashless and digital transactions out of necessity. We quickly realized that if we ...

Ketan Sheikh’s Column on Banking and Finance The Price of Money (Published in Shobdo Mukur Boishakh 1432 edition) Financial Literacy and Bank Accounts Boishakh means Hal Khata (traditional account book opening) and Hal Khata means the beginning of a new year’s financial planning. So, under the headline “The Price of Money,” we too will begin with discussions on your financial literacy, financial inclusion and fresh perspectives on money management. Today, I will discuss in the first part why financial literacy and banking inclusion are so crucial in our daily lives and in the second part, I will talk about how opening a bank account can be the first step in this process. Banks and Our Daily Life Many of us immediately think of banks when it comes to any kind of financial transaction. At the same time, many others remain distant from banks. Some of us panic at the mere mention of banking, feel distrust, consider it troublesome or lose patience amid complicated procedures and forma...
